Île-à-la-Crosse School Settlement

The Court has approved the Île-à-la-Crosse School Settlement.

Class members can begin to apply for compensation on June 1, 2026. More information about how to apply, including the claim form and available supports, will be shared at that time.

The class action covers harms at the Île-à-la-Crosse School and residence, which operated from around 1860–1975/76.

If you attended the Île-à-la-Crosse School, you may be eligible for compensation.
If your relative attended the school and passed away on or after December 9, 2003, you may also be eligible through their estate or as an heir.

What happens next?

The Settlements with Canada and Saskatchewan were approved by order of the Court on April 29, 2026.

The settlement approval order will become effective May 30, 2026, assuming there are no appeals.

Survivors or their family members who wish to apply for compensation can do so starting June 1, 2026.

No compensation will be available until after the claims period opens. You do not need to hire a lawyer to take part or to receive compensation.

Your options

1. Wait

If you support the settlements, you do not have to do anything right now. More information will be available after the claims period starts June 1, 2026.

2. Opt out

If you do not want to receive compensation from the settlements and keep your right to sue Canada or Saskatchewan as an individual for harms experienced at the Île-à-la-Crosse School, you can opt out. If you opt out, you will not receive compensation through this settlement. You will keep your right to pursue your own legal action.

The Opt-Out Form and deadline will be made available on June 1, 2026.

More information about the settlement decision, including approval documents and Court orders, are available in Forms and Documents.
